Founded in 1952, Children’s Hospital of Fudan University is a budget management unit of National Health Commission and a tertiary A-level hospital, which is a comprehensive specialized hospital for children that integrates medical care, teaching, research, prevention and management. Also, it is a construction unit for national key discipline of pediatrics, national “project 985” and “double first-class initiative”. Its pediatrics ranks the forefront in China Hospital Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics Ranking (released by Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences), China Hospital Specialty Reputation Ranking (released by Fudan University) and China Best Clinical Disciplines Ranking (released by Peking University). The hospital was approved as National Children’s Medical Center and National Civilized Unit in 2017 and National Medical Quality Control Centre for Paediatric Specialties in 2020. In 2021, it won the tenth Magnolia Award of Shanghai for children’s work.
The hospital currently has 637 doctors (including standardized training doctors), 865 nurses and 1,000 open beds. With 50 clinical medical departments, the hospital owns 17 national clinical key specialties Construction Project(including Neonatology, Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Gastroenterology, TCM Pediatrics, Key Laboratory of Neonatal Diseases, Pediatrics Surgery, Clinical Care, Transplantation Medicine, Multidisciplinary management model for severe childhood infections, Construction of Minimally Invasive Surgery Application System in Pediatric Surgery, Construction of precise diagnosis and treatment system for severe cardiovascular diseases in children, Integrated management of chronic kidney disease in children, Pediatric Oncology, Improvement of diagnosis and treatment ability for neurodevelopmental disorders in children, Establishment and promotion of a precise management system for major structural deformities throughout the entire cycle and link, Systematic construction of precision diagnosis, treatment, and research for rare diseases in children, Improvement of standardized diagnosis and treatment capabilities for accurate diagnosis and treatment of pediatric hematological malignancies throughout the entire process).
In 2021, the hospital advanced the “Six+ Six” strategy by building six clinical centers (Precision Diagnosis Center for Difficult and Complicated Diseases, Neonatal Clinical Center, Birth Defect Clinical Center, Hematological Oncology Clinical Center, Infectious Disease and Immunity Clinical Center, Child Development and Rehabilitation Clinical Center) and constructing six supporting platforms (Minimally Invasive Medicine Platform, Transplantation Medicine platform, Life Support Technology Platform for Critical Illness, Imaging Medicine Platform, Molecular Medicine Platform, Clinical Research Center Platform), thus embarking on a new journey in the construction of Children’s National Medical Center.
The hospital is a chairman unit of Pediatrics Teaching Steering Committee of Ministry of Education, a relying unit of pediatric department of Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University, the national first-batch key specialty base (pediatric base), and national standardized training base for resident physicians (pediatric base, pediatric surgery base). With national excellent teaching teams, it served as chief editor in national planning textbooks such as “Pediatrics”, “Pediatric Surgery” and nearly two hundred important monographs. The hospital undertakes theoretical teaching and clinical practical teaching in clinical medicine (eight-year program, five-year program, overseas students), basic medicine and public hygiene, as well as training of masters and doctors in pediatrics. Every year, more than 50 sessions of national continuing education learning classes are held, training nearly 800 students for long-term study and short-term exchanges.
In the past decade, the hospital has undertaken 813 national key R&D plans/national key specialties and key subjects of National Natural Science Foundation of China. More than 2,100 high-influence papers have been published on important international academic journals like “Nature”, “Science”, “The Lancet”, winning more than 50 scientific research awards of provincial and ministerial level and above. The hospital runs academic journals such as “Chinese Journal of Evidence Based Pediatrics”, “Pediatric Medicine”. The hospital has 3 key laboratories of provincial and ministerial level.
By establishing close cooperation with 26 international renowned medical institutions in America, Canada, Japan and other countries and regions, the hospital extensively carries out international exchanges and implements international joint cultivation programs. It held International Forum of Presidents of Children’s Hospitals, Annual Meeting of the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgery, International Congress of Pediatric Nephrology and other large-scale international academic meetings on pediatrics and specialty forums. By setting “Shanghai International Consultation Hall”, it organized top experts and multi-disciplinary teams at home and abroad to formulate optimal scheme for precision diagnosis of children with difficult and complicated diseases.
In 2023, the hospital provided outpatient emergency treatment to 2,508,300 attendances, hospitalization service to 49,700 attendances and surgeries to 20,500 attendances, becoming a highland for the diagnosis and treatment of children with difficult and critical diseases. The hospital strives to give whole life-cycle care to children and their families. It set up the first patient experience department in China and carried out three rounds of three-year action plan of “paying attention to children’s medical experience” on a continuous basis, creating a series of well received humanistic service brands such as “Window for Listening”, “Xiaobu's Home”, “Children's Medical Experience Hall”, “Pediatric Observer Group”, “Parent Committee”, etc.
